What’s Shinise?

In Japanese, “Shinise” means long-established stores.

It is not rare that some of them has been continued for over 200 years.

They keep their traditional way to produce.

Especially, some Japanese-style confectionar stores which has been continued since Edo period has Japanese traditional atmosphere and are nice to visit.

Today, I introduce one of them.

Long-established Japanese-style confectionar stores, Funabashiya

Funabashiya was founded in 1805.

In Edo period (from the 17th to the 19th century), the area around Kameido Tenjinsha(Shrine) was popular because of annual events held at shrines.

Then the master of Funabashiya started to sell Japanese sweets and it became famous as the best sweets in Edo city(Edo is the old name of Tokyo).

It is said Japanese historical people such as Takamori Saigo and Ryunosuke Akutagawa were tasted with the sweets.

It still remains the then atmosphere and you can feel “Edo” with the nice sweets.

I recommend you Ammitsu.

Ammitsu is a kind of parfait with consists of boiled beans, cubes of agar gelatin, fruits, molasses and red bean past.
